Glorious Reality of War

Published in 2011

The Glorious Reality of War is a fictionalized account of the Civil War experiences of C. W. Rickard based on letters to his daughter many years later.

Fifteen-year-old Charlie Wesley Rickard dreams of adventure and glory are fulfilled when his pastor forms the 24th Iowa Infantry and lets him join as a fifer even though he had never seen a fife before. Charles set aside the fife and picked up a rifle during his first battle experience. However, he discovers war is neither adventurous or glorious.
